Selections, cleanup and retouching — a Photo editing workflow

Step-by-step guidance for LHTSOFT Photo lasso, marquee, quick selection, clone and healing tools without permanent source damage.

Small corrections often matter more than dramatic filters. The useful order is to isolate the region, duplicate the layer, repair it at a realistic zoom, and evaluate the result at normal viewing size.

Choose the right selection method

A rectangle or ellipse marquee is well suited to geometric objects and quick crop-like selections. A lasso follows an irregular border by hand. Magic Wand groups pixels of similar color, while Quick Selection can help with broader subjects.

No automatic selection is perfect around hair, reflections or semi-transparent objects. Refine the edge manually and inspect it against a contrasting background. The selection is only a target boundary until you apply a change.

Remove small defects

  1. Duplicate the image layer and work on the copy. Zoom in enough to see the blemish but avoid judging texture only at extreme zoom.
  2. Use a small healing brush for isolated spots, or the clone tool to replace a small area with nearby similar texture.
  3. Move across the corrected area at 100% and at fit-to-screen zoom. Repeating patterns or blurred edges become easier to spot at normal size.

Keep subject edges clean

A soft edge looks natural against shallow depth-of-field photographs, but can create a visible halo around sharp text or logos. Change feathering according to content type.

When moving a selected region, inspect its original background for gaps. A layer mask can help refine a composite without destructively erasing detail.

Compare and export

Toggle the retouch layer to compare with the original. A correction is successful when it no longer attracts attention at normal display size.

Use PNG to inspect quality without new JPEG compression artifacts during iteration. Export a final JPEG only once, at the required size, then retain .lhtp for future edits.
